How to get a MySpace page.

Launch yourself into MySpace.
by Emma van Beurden.
If MySpace was a country it would be the eighth largest in the world.

And that's just this month. If you want to join this rapidly growing population and stay in touch with friends from next door or across the world, all you need is a MySpace account.

If you are want to sign up and chat to mates online, visit www.myspace.com. The steps to becoming a MySpace member are simple. On the homepage is a signup option for new members. It will ask for your details, such as your birthday and where you are from. You can fill this out truthfully or, if you are security conscious or feel like having a laugh, you can make it all up. Once you've filled it in, you have a basic profile set up and all you need to do is confirm your email address with MySpace.

Now you can write about yourself, your interests and heroes and meet like-minded people from around the world. You can also post a picture of yourself on your page, or a fun picture of a pet or cartoon character if you are camera shy. The edit option on your profile lets you change your profile and add photos as often as you like. You can also add friends to your profile. Click on the 'add to friends' option on someone's profile, and they will get a message telling them you want to be their friend. They can accept or decline your request.

One of MySpace's most popular functions is the ability to message your friends, send out bulletins and add comments on friends' pages. When you post a comment everyone can read what you have said, so be careful what you say. When you message your friends only they will be able to read what you have written. The options for jazzing up your MySpace profile are endless. You can add slideshows, videos, songs and colourful backdrops. It all depends on how much time you have and the speed of your internet connection. If your computer is slow don't add too many fancy things to your profile or you'll be waiting forever.

It's important to follow MySpace's rules and guidelines. MySpace is a free site for everyone to enjoy so treat it as you would any public space. Your profile will be closed down if you post obscene pictures or harass other members. If anyone harasses you, report it to MySpace.

If you are security conscious and feel uneasy about anyone being able to look at your profile, make your profile private so only your friends can read all about you. Check out Giga Girl's profile at http://www.myspace.com/118621996 - she would love to hear from you.
